Sapere vs Conoscere

English uses one verb, "to know," for two things Italian keeps strictly separate. Here's the difference, side by side, plus the one rule that catches most mistakes.

Sapere = facts, information, and skills (sapere + infinitive = "to know how to").
Conoscere = to be acquainted or familiar with people, places, and things.

A useful way to test which one you need: if you could rephrase the English sentence with "to be familiar with" or "to have met," it's conoscere. If you could rephrase it with "to know how to" or "to know that," it's sapere.

💡 Quick test: "I know Paris" → could you say "I'm familiar with Paris"? Yes → conosco Parigi. "I know it's raining" → could you say "I'm familiar with it's raining"? No, that's nonsense → it has to be so che piove.

⚠️ Conoscere never takes a "che" clause. "I know that…" is always sapere che — never conoscere che. If what follows is a fact or a whole sentence, it's sapere; if it's a person, place, or thing you'd meet or visit, it's conoscere.

One Extra Wrinkle: Meeting Someone

In the passato prossimo, conoscere often shifts meaning slightly — from "to be familiar with" to "to meet (for the first time)."

Conosco Marco da anni.	I've known Marco for years. (imperfetto/presente — ongoing familiarity)
Ho conosciuto Marco ieri.	I met Marco yesterday. (passato prossimo — the moment of meeting)

💡 This is the same logic as sapere shifting meaning in the passato prossimo too: ho saputo often means "I found out," not just "I knew."
