Lesson 17: Il Congiuntivo Presente

The mood behind opinions, doubts, and wishes · Regular and irregular forms · When che triggers it and when it doesn't

CEFR Level B1B1 · Lesson 1 of 8
01๐ŸŽฏ

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson you will be able to:

โœ…Form the regular congiuntivo presente for -are, -ere, -ire verbs
โœ…Conjugate the most common irregular subjunctives (essere, avere, andare, fare, potere...)
โœ…Recognize the verbs and phrases that require the subjunctive
โœ…Apply the "different subject" rule that governs che + congiuntivo
โฑ๏ธ Study time: ~2.5 hours. This is the lesson that unlocks the rest of B1 โ€” nearly everything from here builds on the congiuntivo, so take your time.
02๐Ÿ”ง

Forming the Congiuntivo Presente

You already know the indicativo present inside out. The congiuntivo presente is built with a twist: -are verbs take -ere-style endings, and -ere/-ire verbs take -are-style endings โ€” and, unusually, io/tu/lui-lei all share the exact same form.

๐Ÿ”‘ The Swap

-are verbs (parlare) use endings built on -i: parli, parli, parli, parliamo, parliate, parlino. -ere/-ire verbs (credere, dormire) use endings built on -a: creda, creda, creda, crediamo, crediate, credano.

Regular Congiuntivo Presente
Pronounparlarecrederedormire
ioparlicredadorma
tuparlicredadorma
lui/lei/Leiparlicredadorma
noiparliamocrediamodormiamo
voiparliatecrediatedormiate
loroparlinocredanodormano
โš ๏ธ Because io/tu/lui-lei are identical, subject pronouns are often kept in the subjunctive โ€” dropped elsewhere in Italian โ€” precisely to avoid ambiguity: Penso che tu parli (not just che parli) when it's not obvious from context.
๐Ÿ’ก -isc- verbs like capire keep that pattern here too: capisca, capisca, capisca, capiamo, capiate, capiscano.
03โšก

Irregular Congiuntivo Forms

A handful of very common verbs are irregular โ€” and you'll use them constantly, so it's worth memorizing these outright rather than deriving them.

The Essential Irregulars
Pronounessereavereandarefarepoterevolere
iosiaabbiavadafacciapossavoglia
tusiaabbiavadafacciapossavoglia
lui/leisiaabbiavadafacciapossavoglia
noisiamoabbiamoandiamofacciamopossiamovogliamo

lorosianoabbianovadanofaccianopossanovogliano
๐Ÿ’ก dovere follows potere's pattern (debba, debba, debba, dobbiamo, dobbiate, debbano), and stare/dare behave like essere-family irregulars: stia/stiamo/stiate/stiano, dia/diamo/diate/diano.

Verbs & Phrases That Trigger It

The congiuntivo isn't random โ€” it's required after specific categories of expressions in the main clause, all sharing one thing: they present the second clause as an opinion, doubt, wish, or emotion rather than a plain fact.

CategoryCommon triggersExample
Opinionpenso che, credo che, mi sembra chePenso che sia una buon'idea.
Doubt / uncertaintydubito che, non sono sicuro cheDubito che lui venga stasera.
Wish / hopespero che, voglio che, desidero cheSpero che tu stia bene.
Emotionsono contento che, mi dispiace che, ho paura cheSono contento che tu sia qui.
Impersonal necessity/possibilityรจ importante che, bisogna che, รจ possibile cheBisogna che tu studi di piรน.
โš ๏ธ Certainty flips it back to indicativo: Sono sicuro che viene (fact) vs Non sono sicuro che venga (doubt) โ€” the same verb, opposite mood, depending on whether the speaker is certain.
05๐Ÿ”

One Subject Rule: Che + Same Subject

If the subject of both clauses is the same person, Italian drops che entirely and uses an infinitive instead โ€” the congiuntivo only appears when the two clauses have different subjects.

๐Ÿ”‘ Same Subject vs Different Subject

Same subject โ†’ di + infinitive: Penso di avere ragione (I think I'm right). Different subject โ†’ che + congiuntivo: Penso che tu abbia ragione (I think you're right).

Same subject (infinitive)Different subject (congiuntivo)
Spero di partire presto.Spero che tu parta presto.
Credo di capire.Credo che loro capiscano.
Voglio andare.Voglio che tu vada.
06โœ’๏ธ

Spelling-Change & Reflexive Verbs

A few verb families need a small spelling tweak in the congiuntivo to keep their sound consistent, and reflexive verbs just add the reflexive pronoun in front like anywhere else.

๐Ÿ”‘ -care / -gare Verbs

Verbs ending in -care and -gare insert an h before every ending, to keep the hard c/g sound: cercare โ†’ cerchi, cerchi, cerchi, cerchiamo, cerchiate, cerchino.

Pronouncercarepagare
iocerchipaghi
noicerchiamopaghiamo
lorocerchinopaghino
๐Ÿ”‘ -ciare / -giare Verbs

These drop the i before endings that already start with i, since two i's in a row would be redundant: cominciare โ†’ cominci (not comincii), mangiare โ†’ mangi (not mangii).

Reflexive Verbs in the Congiuntivo

Reflexive verbs work exactly the same way, with the reflexive pronoun placed before the verb as usual: Penso che tu ti svegli troppo tardi. (I think you wake up too late.)

Pronounsvegliarsi
iomi svegli
tuti svegli
lui/leisi svegli
noici svegliamo
voivi svegliate
lorosi sveglino
๐Ÿ’ก These spelling changes aren't new grammar โ€” they're the same -care/-gare/-ciare/-giare patterns you already learned for the presente indicativo and the futuro. The congiuntivo just applies the same logic to a new set of endings.

Cultural Notes: Opinion as a Social Ritual

Secondo Me โ€” Everyone Has a Take

Italians debate opinions constantly and openly โ€” about football, food, politics, the "correct" way to make a carbonara โ€” and secondo me ("in my opinion") is one of the most-used phrases in the language. Because opinion talk is so frequent, the congiuntivo that follows it isn't a rare bookish form; it's baseline everyday speech.

In casual speech, especially among younger speakers, the indicativo sometimes creeps in where the congiuntivo is "correct" (penso che รจ vero instead of penso che sia vero). It's heard, but it's still considered informal or careless โ€” B1-level and above learners are expected to use the proper congiuntivo.

๐Ÿ”‘ Key Takeaways โ€” What You Learned Today

Ottimo lavoro! ๐ŸŽ‰

You've just learned the single most important structure in B1 Italian. The congiuntivo will keep showing up all the way through the rest of this course, so the practice you do this week really pays off.

Lesson 18 covers ci and ne โ€” two small but essential particle pronouns for talking about places, topics, and quantities without repeating yourself.
