⏱️ Study time: ~2.5 hours. Reported speech is everywhere in real conversation — gossip, news, retelling a phone call — and it draws on nearly every tense you've learned so far.

Direct vs Indirect Speech

Direct speech quotes the exact words; indirect speech reports them inside a che clause, and — if the reporting verb is in the past — the tenses inside shift backward.

🔑 The Pattern

Marco ha detto: "Sono stanco." (direct) → Marco ha detto che era stanco. (indirect) — sono (present) became era (imperfetto).

Tense-Shifting Rules

When the reporting verb (ha detto, ha detto che) is in a past tense, the quoted tense shifts one step back in time.

Worked Examples

"Vado al mare" → Ha detto che andava al mare.

"Ho finito" → Ha detto che aveva finito.

"Verrò domani" → Ha detto che sarebbe venuto il giorno dopo.

💡 If the reporting verb is in the present (dice che), no shift happens at all — the quoted tense stays exactly as spoken: Dice che va al mare.

Pronoun, Time & Place Shifts

Beyond verb tenses, pronouns and time/place words also shift to match the new speaker's perspective.

⚠️ These shifts depend on when/where you're reporting the speech from — if you're retelling it the same day, oggi can stay oggi. Context always overrides the mechanical rule.

Advanced Connectors

B1 Italian starts reaching for more sophisticated linking words — the kind that make speech and writing sound genuinely polished rather than just correct.

💡 Notice how many of these trigger the congiuntivo — nonostante, affinché, and a meno che all require it, adding yet another use for the mood you built in Lessons 17, 20, and 22.

Reporting Questions

Questions get reported too, using chiedere (to ask) — and the tense-shift rules from Section 3 apply exactly the same way.

🔑 Yes/No Questions: Se

chiedere se reports a yes/no question: "Vieni?" → Mi ha chiesto se venivo. (He asked me if I was coming.)

🔑 Question-Word Questions: Keep the Word

Questions with cosa, chi, dove, quando, perché keep that same question word: "Dove vai?" → Mi ha chiesto dove andavo. (He asked me where I was going.)

Cultural Notes: Ha Detto Che...

The Grammar of Gossip and News

Ha detto che... is the backbone of Italian gossip, news reporting, and everyday storytelling — Italians retell conversations constantly, and doing it smoothly with correct tense shifts is a real marker of fluency. Meanwhile, connectors like tuttavia and di conseguenza signal register: reaching for them in a work email or presentation, rather than the more casual ma and quindi, is one of the clearest ways B1+ speakers sound more polished without changing what they're actually saying.
