CEFR Level C2C2 · Lesson 2 of 8

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson you will be able to:

โœ… Use aspectual verbal periphrases (verbi fraseologici) to express exactly how far along an action is
โœ… Distinguish stare per + infinito (imminence) from stare + gerundio (simple ongoing progress)
โœ… Use andare/venire + gerundio for gradual, evolving development, and andare + participio passato for its obligation/passivizing sense
โœ… Use finire per/col + infinito to express an unplanned or eventual outcome
โฑ๏ธ Study time: ~2 hours. These periphrases are individually simple โ€” the challenge is choosing precisely the right one for the aspectual nuance you mean.
02โณ

Stare per + Infinito: L'Imminenza

Stare per + infinitive marks an action as about to happen โ€” imminent, not yet underway.

๐Ÿ”‘ The Core Pattern

Sto per uscire. (I'm about to leave.) Il treno stava per partire quando siamo arrivati. (The train was about to leave when we arrived.) The action hasn't started; it's on the verge of starting.

๐Ÿ”‘ Essere sul Punto di: The Elevated Synonym

For a more formal or literary register, essere sul punto di + infinitive replaces stare per: Era sul punto di confessare tutto, quando squillรฒ il telefono. (He was on the verge of confessing everything, when the phone rang.)

PatternExampleNuance
stare per + inf.Sta per piovere.neutral register, very common
essere sul punto di + inf.รˆ sul punto di cedere.more formal/literary
essere in procinto di + inf.รˆ in procinto di partire.formal, slightly bureaucratic
03๐Ÿ“ˆ

Andare/Venire + Gerundio: Il Progressivo Evolutivo

Unlike stare + gerundio (a simple snapshot of an action in progress), andare + gerundio frames the action as gradually developing or accumulating over time.

๐Ÿ”‘ Andare + Gerundio: Gradual Development

La situazione va migliorando. (The situation is gradually improving.) versus the flatter La situazione sta migliorando. (The situation is improving [right now].) Andare + gerundio implies a trend building over time, not just a present-moment state.

๐Ÿ”‘ Venire + Gerundio: A More Literary Register

Venire + gerundio is a more formal alternative, often used to refer back to something already being discussed: Come venivo dicendo prima dell'interruzione... (As I was saying before the interruption...) This is distinctly more formal than come stavo dicendo.

PeriphrasisExampleEnglish sense
andare + gerundioIl problema va peggiorando.the problem is gradually getting worse
andare + gerundioLe vendite vanno calando.sales are gradually declining
venire + gerundioCome venivo dicendo...as I was saying (formal)
๐Ÿ’ก A quick test: if you can naturally insert "poco a poco" (little by little) into the sentence without changing its meaning, andare + gerundio is usually the right choice over stare + gerundio.
04๐ŸŽฒ

Finire per/col + Infinito: L'Esito Non Pianificato

Finire per (or the more colloquial finire col) + infinitive marks an outcome that wasn't originally planned or intended โ€” something you ended up doing.

๐Ÿ”‘ The Core Pattern

Ha finito per accettare l'offerta, anche se all'inizio era contrario. (He ended up accepting the offer, even though he was against it at first.) Abbiamo finito col restare fino a mezzanotte. (We ended up staying until midnight.) Both versions carry the same sense of an eventual, somewhat unplanned result.

RegisterFormExample
neutral/writtenfinire per + inf.Finรฌ per confessare.
spoken/colloquialfinire col + inf.Ha finito col confessare.
โš ๏ธ Don't confuse this with simply "finishing" an action (finire di + infinitive, meaning "to finish doing something"): Ho finito di mangiare (I finished eating) is a completely different structure from Ho finito per mangiare la pizza avanzata (I ended up eating the leftover pizza).
05๐Ÿ“‹

Andare + Participio Passato: Il Valore Passivante e Modale

Andare + past participle expresses necessity or obligation โ€” a more elegant, formal alternative to dovere essere + participle.

๐Ÿ”‘ Obligation, Not Motion

Il documento va firmato entro venerdรฌ. (The document must be signed by Friday.) โ€” functionally equivalent to deve essere firmato, but more compact and more typical of formal written registers, especially instructions and official notices.

๐Ÿ”‘ The Fixed Formula: Va Detto Che...

Va detto che, va ricordato che, va sottolineato che (it must be said/remembered/emphasized that) are extremely common formulaic openers in opinion writing and argumentative essays โ€” a direct, elegant way to flag an important point: Va detto che la questione รจ piรน complessa di quanto sembri.

FormExampleMeaning
andare + p.p.Il modulo va compilato in stampatello.the form must be filled in block letters
andare + p.p.Va perso il senso originale.the original meaning gets/is lost
formula fissaVa detto che...it must be said that...
06๐Ÿ“–

Venire + Participio Passato: Alternativa Letteraria a Essere

In formal and literary writing, venire can replace essere as the passive auxiliary โ€” a stylistic choice, not a meaning change.

๐Ÿ”‘ Essere vs Venire in the Passive

La legge fu approvata nel 1948. (essere, neutral) vs. La legge venne approvata nel 1948. (venire, slightly more formal/literary, and typically restricted to simple, punctual tenses โ€” passato remoto or futuro โ€” never with compound tenses).

โš ๏ธ Venire as passive auxiliary only works with simple tenses. You can say viene approvata or venne approvata, but not *รจ venuta approvata for a compound tense โ€” there, essere is obligatory: รจ stata approvata.

Debate โ€” Do These Periphrases Even Matter in Everyday Speech?
GIACOMO
Onestamente, chi usa davvero 'andare + gerundio' nel parlato di tutti i giorni?
Honestly, who really uses 'andare + gerundio' in everyday spoken Italian?
VALENTINA
Piรน gente di quanto pensi โ€” 'la situazione va peggiorando' si sente spesso al telegiornale.
More people than you'd think โ€” 'the situation is gradually worsening' comes up often on the news.
GIACOMO
Vero, ma nel parlato informale finiamo quasi sempre per usare solo 'sta peggiorando'.
True, but in informal speech we almost always end up just using 'it's getting worse.'
VALENTINA
Esatto โ€” ed รจ proprio per questo che riconoscerle nella lettura conta piรน che produrle a voce.
Exactly โ€” and that's precisely why recognizing them in reading matters more than producing them out loud.

Cultural Notes: Perifrasi nel Giornalismo Italiano

Va Sottolineato Che... โ€” Un Marchio di Fabbrica del Giornalismo

Open any Italian opinion column or television commentary and you'll quickly spot the andare + participio formulas โ€” va detto, va ricordato, va sottolineato โ€” used constantly to flag a key point without sounding overly personal or informal. It's a house style as recognizable as "it is worth noting" is in English editorial writing.

Andare and venire + gerundio periphrases show up just as often in economic reporting โ€” lo spread va riducendo, i consumi vanno calando โ€” precisely because they frame a trend as gradual and ongoing rather than as a single completed fact, which is often exactly the nuance financial journalism needs.
