Lesson 20: Full Hypothetical Sentences

Se fossi, se avessi · Real, possible, and impossible conditions · Congiuntivo imperfetto & trapassato

CEFR Level B1B1 · Lesson 4 of 8
01๐ŸŽฏ

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson you will be able to:

โœ…Build real, possible, and impossible hypothetical sentences
โœ…Form the congiuntivo imperfetto and congiuntivo trapassato
โœ…Match the correct condizionale (presente or passato) to each type
โœ…Avoid the classic learner mistake of mixing indicativo into the se clause
โฑ๏ธ Study time: ~3 hours. This lesson completes a pattern you first saw in A2 Lesson 12 โ€” se fossi in te was a preview then; now you'll build the whole system.
02โœ…

Type 1 โ€” Real Conditions

For conditions that are realistic or likely, Italian keeps it simple: indicativo in both clauses, exactly like English "if."

๐Ÿ”‘ Se + Presente, Presente/Futuro

Se piove, non usciamo. (If it rains, we don't go out.) / Se avrรฒ tempo, ti chiamerรฒ. (If I have time, I'll call you.)

๐Ÿ’ก No congiuntivo here at all โ€” this is the one type that stays fully in the indicativo, so don't overcomplicate it.
03๐ŸŒค๏ธ

Type 2 โ€” Possible/Unreal Present

For a hypothetical that's unlikely, imaginary, or contrary to present reality โ€” "if I were..." โ€” Italian pairs the congiuntivo imperfetto with the condizionale presente.

๐Ÿ”‘ Se + Congiuntivo Imperfetto, Condizionale Presente

Se fossi ricco, viaggerei di piรน. (If I were rich, I would travel more.) โ€” I'm not rich, this is imaginary/unlikely right now.

ItalianEnglish
Se avessi piรน tempo, imparerei il francese. If I had more time, I'd learn French.
Se fossi in te, non lo farei. If I were you, I wouldn't do it.
04โฎ๏ธ

Type 3 โ€” Impossible/Past Conditions

For a condition that's now impossible because it's in the past โ€” "if I had done..." โ€” Italian pairs the congiuntivo trapassato with the condizionale passato.

๐Ÿ”‘ Se + Congiuntivo Trapassato, Condizionale Passato

Se avessi studiato di piรน, avrei passato l'esame. (If I had studied more, I would have passed the exam.) โ€” the studying didn't happen, it's over, it's a fact of the past that can't change.

ItalianEnglish
Se fossi arrivato prima, l'avresti incontrata. If you had arrived earlier, you would have met her.
Se non avessimo perso il treno, saremmo giร  a casa.If we hadn't missed the train, we'd already be home. (mixed: past condition, present result)
โš ๏ธ The most common learner mistake: using se + condizionale (se avrei studiato) instead of se + congiuntivo. The se clause is never in the condizionale โ€” only the result clause can be.
05๐Ÿ”ง

Congiuntivo Imperfetto Formation

Regular and mostly predictable โ€” built off the infinitive stem with -ssi endings.

Pronounparlareavereessere
ioparlassiavessifossi
tuparlassiavessifossi
lui/leiparlasseavessefosse
noiparlassimoavessimofossimo
voiparlasteavestefoste
loroparlasseroavesserofossero
06๐Ÿ”ฉ

Congiuntivo Trapassato Formation

Congiuntivo imperfetto of avere/essere + past participle โ€” the same "compound tense" logic you already know.

Pronounstudiare (avere)arrivare (essere)
ioavessi studiatofossi arrivato/a
tuavessi studiatofossi arrivato/a
lui/leiavesse studiatofosse arrivato/a
noiavessimo studiatofossimo arrivati/e
voiaveste studiatofoste arrivati/e
loroavessero studiatofossero arrivati/e
07๐Ÿ”€

Mixed Hypotheticals

Real speech doesn't always stay inside one neat type โ€” a past condition can easily produce a present result, mixing Type 3's se clause with a Type 2-style result.

๐Ÿ”‘ Past Condition, Present Result

Se + congiuntivo trapassato, condizionale presente: Se avessi studiato medicina, ora sarei un dottore. (If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now.) โ€” the studying is a past fact, but "being a doctor" describes the present.

ItalianEnglish
Se non avessimo perso il treno, saremmo giร  a casa.If we hadn't missed the train, we'd already be home.
Se ti fossi allenato di piรน, ora saresti piรน in forma. If you had trained more, you'd be more fit now.
๐Ÿ’ก This mix is extremely common in real conversation โ€” don't be afraid to use it once the two "pure" types feel solid. Native speakers reach for it constantly when connecting a past regret to a present consequence.

Cultural Notes: Se Fossi in Te

Giving Advice, the Italian Way

Se fossi in te ("if I were you") is the standard Italian frame for giving advice โ€” softer and less direct than a blunt command. Combined with the condizionale, it makes suggestions feel like shared reflection rather than instruction, which fits the generally indirect, relationship-conscious style Italians favor when telling someone what to do.

๐Ÿ”‘ Key Takeaways โ€” What You Learned Today

Eccellente! ๐ŸŽ‰

The periodo ipotetico is one of the most complex structures in Italian grammar, and you've just built the whole system from real to impossible โ€” a genuine milestone.

Lesson 21 covers the passive voice and the impersonal si โ€” two structures for talking about actions without naming who's doing them.
