B1 is where you should be able to hold a genuine debate โ defending an opinion, conceding a point, reporting what someone else said. These extended dialogues combine everything from Lessons 17โ23.
| Lesson | Structure | Core pattern |
|---|---|---|
| 17 | Congiuntivo presente | -i / -a endings; triggered by opinion, doubt, wish, emotion, necessity |
| 18 | Ci and ne | ci = place/topic; ne = quantity/topic; combine as ce n'รจ |
| 19 | Trapassato prossimo | imperfetto avere/essere + participio โ the earlier of two past events |
| 20 | Periodo ipotetico | real (ind./ind.), possible (cong. imperf./cond. pres.), impossible (cong. trapass./cond. pass.) |
| 21 | Passive & si | essere + participio; si passivante (agrees); si impersonale (always singular) |
| 22 | Congiuntivo passato/trapassato | sequence of tenses: main clause tense decides which congiuntivo tense |
| 23 | Discorso indiretto | tense shifts back one step when reporting verb is past |
If A1โA2 taught you to state facts about your life, B1 has taught you to have a perspective on them โ to hedge, doubt, hypothesize, and report what other people think. That shift, more than any single grammar point, is what separates an elementary speaker from an intermediate one, and it's exactly why the congiuntivo has been the throughline of this entire level.

1. era chiuso / aveva giร chiuso 2. avessi 3. sarei venuto/a
