Real Debates & Advanced Reading

B2 is where you should be able to hold a genuinely structured debate โ€” conceding points, using formal register when needed, and narrating with real precision. These extended dialogues combine everything from Lessons 25โ€“31.

Debate โ€” Should Universities Require a Thesis in Passato Remoto Style?
ELENA
Nevertheless, I think writing in a more literary style, also using the passato remoto, helps students read the classics better.
MARCO
Non sono del tutto d'accordo. Pur essendo utile per la lettura, obbligare tutti a scriverlo mi sembra eccessivo โ€” in effetti, quasi nessuno lo usa piรน parlando.
I don't entirely agree. While useful for reading, forcing everyone to write it seems excessive to me โ€” indeed, almost nobody uses it anymore when speaking.
ELENA
I understand your point. What's more, they could have students write just a short excerpt, not the whole thesis.
MARCO
On this I agree โ€” provided it stays an optional exercise, not a mandatory one.
Conversation โ€” A Family Story, Told Formally
NIPOTE
รน?
Grandpa, having lived through the war as a child, what do you remember most?
NONNO
I was born right during those years. My father, despite having little, always did everything he could for us.
NIPOTE
Mom told me that you had your older brother help you get to school.
NONNO
Exactly โ€” whoever had an older brother, back then, considered themselves lucky.
Debate โ€” Should Remote Interviews Replace In-Person Ones?
GIACOMO
I'd be grateful if you'd consider the advantages: by doing interviews online, you save time and money.
VALENTINA
Regarding that, on the other hand, many recruiters say they pick up on fewer nuances remotely.
GIACOMO
Vero.
True. That said, well then, I believe a hybrid format โ€” a first interview online, a second in person โ€” solves the problem.
VALENTINA
In definitiva, mi trovi d'accordo su questo compromesso.
Ultimately, you'll find me in agreement on this compromise.

Cultural Notes: B2 in Review

From Fluent to Precise

If A1โ€“A2 taught you to survive and B1 taught you to have opinions, B2 has taught you precision โ€” the gerundio's compression, the passato remoto's narrative distance, register control, and a genuinely rich set of textual connectors. That precision, more than any single structure, is what separates an intermediate speaker from an upper-intermediate one, and it's exactly why this level felt noticeably denser than B1.

You're now equipped to read real, unsimplified Italian โ€” news, fiction, formal correspondence โ€” and to write and speak with real stylistic control, not just grammatical correctness.

Your Roadmap to C1

You've built a genuinely precise upper-intermediate foundation. Here's what typically comes next at C1 (Advanced):

1Idiomatic fluency โ€” moving from grammatically precise to genuinely native-sounding in word choice and phrasing
2Rare congiuntivo and conditional nuances โ€” including uses in concessive and hypothetical chains beyond B2's core set
3Stylistic register control โ€” matching not just formal/informal but literary, journalistic, and technical styles
4Specialized and abstract topics โ€” economics, philosophy, science โ€” discussed comfortably without simplification
5Extended listening & reading โ€” Italian film, literature, and academic material without any simplification at all
๐ŸŽฏ B2 โ†’ C1 transition tip: Before moving to C1 content, spend 3โ€“4 weeks reading real Italian fiction or long-form journalism daily, and try narrating a real story from your life using the passato remoto. A genuinely solid B2 foundation makes C1 dramatically more approachable.
