Indicativo vs Congiuntivo
The same kind of sentence can take either mood depending on certainty. Here's the decision test and every trigger category in one place.
CEFR Level B1โC1The Core Rule
Use the indicativo for plain facts and things you're certain of. Use the congiuntivo when the same kind of sentence instead expresses an opinion, doubt, wish, emotion, or something unverified or exceptional. The clearest test: the exact same phrase can flip mood depending on certainty โ Sono sicuro che viene (indicativo โ it's a fact) versus Non sono sicuro che venga (congiuntivo โ now it's in doubt).
When to Use Each
Indicativo: plain, verifiable facts; objective, measurable claims; certainty (sono sicuro che, so che); the concessive word anche se, unlike its congiuntivo-triggering synonyms.
Congiuntivo triggers, by category:
- Opinion โ penso che, credo che, mi sembra che
- Doubt/uncertainty โ dubito che, non sono sicuro che
- Wish/hope โ spero che, voglio che, desidero che
- Emotion โ sono contento che, mi dispiace che, ho paura che
- Impersonal necessity/possibility โ รจ importante che, bisogna che, รจ possibile che
- Relative clauses of rarity/uniqueness/non-existence
- Subjective superlatives (a personal judgment, not a measurable fact) โ il libro piรน interessante che abbia letto
- Indefinites โ chiunque, qualunque, dovunque, qualsiasi
- Concessive words other than anche se โ sebbene, benchรฉ, nonostante, malgrado
- Come se, always, never indicativo
- Independent/standalone use with no che at all (ottativo/dubitativo)
Side by Side
| Trigger type | Indicativo | Congiuntivo |
|---|---|---|
| Certainty vs doubt (same phrase) | Sono sicuro che viene. | Non sono sicuro che venga. |
| Concessive ("even though") | Anche se piove, usciamo. | Sebbene piova, usciamo. |
| Relative clause | Conosco un ristorante che apre alle 8. | ร l'unico ristorante che mi piaccia in cittร . |
| Superlative | ร il libro piรน lungo della biblioteca. | ร il libro piรน interessante che abbia letto. |
Examples
- So che Marco arriva domani. โ I know Marco is arriving tomorrow. (fact โ indicativo)
- Spero che Marco arrivi domani. โ I hope Marco arrives tomorrow. (hope โ congiuntivo)
- ร vero che lei parla tre lingue. โ It's true that she speaks three languages. (fact โ indicativo)
- Mi sembra strano che lei non parli inglese. โ It seems strange to me that she doesn't speak English. (subjective reaction โ congiuntivo)
Common Mistakes
- Using indicativo after opinion verbs (penso che รจ vero instead of penso che sia vero) โ heard in casual speech, but still informal or careless; B1+ is expected to use congiuntivo.
- Treating a trigger phrase as fixed-mood rather than checking whether the sentence is affirming or doubting โ the certainty flip is the clearest illustration that mood depends on meaning.
- Assuming every concessive word needs congiuntivo and applying it to anche se by analogy with sebbene/benchรฉ โ anche se is the common exception. See Anche Se vs Sebbene for the full breakdown.
- Assuming every relative clause or superlative needs congiuntivo โ a genuinely measurable, objective superlative stays in the indicativo; only a personal-judgment ranking triggers congiuntivo.
Edge Cases
- The certainty flip is the single most teachable pattern here โ the same lexical phrase (sono sicuro che) takes either mood depending on whether it's affirmed or doubted/negated.
- Anche se is the deliberate exception among concessive words โ fully covered on the dedicated comparison page.
- Objective vs subjective superlatives โ the dividing line is whether the ranking is verifiable fact or personal judgment.
- Colloquial drift โ real spoken Italian sometimes uses indicativo informally where congiuntivo is "correct." This is informal/careless usage, not an equally valid alternative.
- Independent congiuntivo has no indicativo counterpart to contrast against โ standalone forms like Magari vincessi alla lotteria! stand alone with no che and no competing indicativo version.
